TNRTB Classic: Space-Energy Density and the Divine Creator

For close to 100 years, astronomers have sought to measure the expansion history of the universe. Among the various tools used, Type Ia supernovae exhibit extraordinary versatility because their incredible brightness means astronomers can observe them across vast distances in the universe. Type Ia supernovae’s unusual environments make them good standard candles for measuring those vast distances.

Back in the 1990s, two research teams used Type Ia supernovae to measure the expansion history of the universe and both found evidence for a mysterious property that causes space to expand with increasing speed.
